Apple's technology will power all future phones, even Android ones—here's why?

The next standard for wireless phone chargers will be based on Apple's MagSafe technology. Yes, for Android too.

The Qi2, the plainly named sequel to all the 'wireless' Qi chargers in use today, will pretty much just be Apple's MagSafe. The Wireless Power Consortium's press release states that it enables faster charging, less power wastage, and "will not reduce battery life or damage a user's phone."

"MagSafe is so good that apparently it will be the new standard for Qi charging devices going forward. It's a plus not having to carefully align your phone on the charging pad," longtime Apple journalist Dan Moren told his readers. Writes on six colours. "It also suggests that other devices and accessories that choose to advertise Qi compatibility will also be MagSafe and iPhone compatible."

Magnetic attraction

You can already charge an iPhone with any old induction-charging pad that the industry has convinced us to call "wireless," even though there's clearly a wire running somewhere to the USB charger somewhere, and you have to keep your device charged. Takti.

The advantage of Apple's MagSafe over Qi chargers is that they have magnets. Induction charging works by creating a magnetic field using metal coils. This field induces an electric current in a nearby coil (for example, inside your phone), which transfers electricity. The efficiency of this transfer depends on the precise alignment of the pads and the coils in the device, and MagSafe magnets do this automatically.

This ensures faster charging and less heat, which is where the wasted energy ends up. MagSafe still isn't nearly as efficient as plugging in a cable, but at least it reduces waste. Wireless charging can use up to 45% more power than using a cable.

"The speed of charging depends on a number of factors, including efficiency and thermal issues. The need for good technology goes hand in hand with the need for standardisation and clear marketing," Igor Spinella, CEO of wireless charging technology company Agtronic, told Lifewire via email. "

While wasted energy is a big problem, the immediate win for users is that their phones will last longer. Batteries hate heat. Charging a battery while it's hot dramatically decreases its overall life, so keeping your phone on a heating pad overnight is a bad idea. MagSafe will at least reduce excess heat, though it certainly won't eliminate it, as every iPhone owner who's used MagSafe already knows.

Profit apple

For the user, this is a clear win. iPhone users will be able to buy third-party chargers, and Android users will get a much better system. And in theory, all those MagSafe accessories—camera lens holders, magnetic card wallets, and so on—for iPhones will work on Android handsets, too.

But it's also good for Apple. It may be giving up on MagSafe, but it's also making sure its own invention becomes the standard. Imagine if it did this with its Lightning connector when everything else charged via the hideous Micro USB connector. We may end up with a universal gadget standard of Lightning instead of the now-mandated EU-mandated USB-C.

With MagSafe, Apple doesn't really have much to lose but a lot to gain. No one will buy a phone just for MagSafe when they can get cheaper and apparently equivalent Qi pads for Android phones. Giving up tech hurts Apple a bit.

But it pays off because all Qi2-certified chargers and devices, whether built-in to Ikea furniture or included in backup battery packs, will work perfectly with Apple's devices.
